Update on working in the East Arnhem region

Update on working in the East Arnhem region

For the last 5 months, I have been working in the East Arnhem region, as a Maternal and Child Health Nurse. In this public health role I supported indigenous families and the school community in maintaining good health measures. Working with the Strong Women Strong Babies Strong Culture Program, combines traditional Aboriginal and current Western knowledge. The Strong Women working in the program, have provided support to my role in providing culturally appropriate education regarding child development, family nutrition and post pregnancy outcomes.
I have also been fortunate enough to be invited to participate in a ‘smoking ceremony’, which is performed after birth as a spiritual ceremony, which is primarily performed by the Strong Women.
